Very Low Carb Diet Improves Immune Function

Following a very low carb diet increases production of ketones – compounds generated when the body burns fats for energy.

Researchers looked at the effects of ketones on immune function.

Results: ketones improved the activity of T cells, the immune cells that focus on attacking foreign substances.

Participants following the keto diet for 3 weeks experienced: 

  • Increased T cell reactivity
  • Increased T cell strength
  • Increased numbers of T cells

Participants reported fatigue on the first 1-5 days of the diet but otherwise no adverse effects were experienced.
