Researchers collected brain scans from over 1,000 people ages 18-88. They found that the first signs of brain aging appear as early as age 47, with the greatest degeneration occurring at age 60.
Then they conducted brain scans on 42 people (under the age of 50) who ate one of two diets for a week: a standard (unrestricted) diet, or a low carb diet.
Results: Even in these younger people, the low carb diet was associated with increased overall brain activity and more stable brain function.
Why? As we age, brain cells don’t metabolize glucose (sugar) as effectively. Ketones (generated by eating a low carb diet, based on the Ketogenic diet) are a more efficient fuel source and could potentially restore aging brains to “more youthful” functioning.
