Researchers in Greece tested the effects of two different olive oils in patients with early stage Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) –a cancer of the white blood cells characterized by abnormally high white blood cell counts. There is no cure for CLL, and the current drug treatments can have significant side effects.
Half the patients received a standard olive oil (2-3 tablespoons daily) and half received an oil high in unique olive compounds (oleocanthal and oleacein) for three months.
Results: White cell counts in the standard olive oil group did not change, but in the high standardization olive oil group, white cell counts went down by 30%. Previous research has found that oleocanthal kills cancer cells but does not harm normal cells.
Olive oil products are frequently counterfeit or faked, so choose with care.
