Lack of sunlight and low humidity in the winter can lead to problems such as:

  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Cold and Flu

Two important nutrients that can reduce or prevent these winter problems are:

  • Vitamin D
  • Omega-7

Why are these nutrients so important in the winter?

Vitamin D is synthesized in response to sunlight, so short winter days reduce vitamin D levels.  A study of young adults living in northern latitudes found that 11% were deficient in vitamin D at the end of the summer versus 30% at the end of winter!

Vitamin D is essential for keeping the immune system strong and reducing the risk of cold and flu.

Omega-7 helps keep skin hydrated.  In a recent survey of over 2,000 American adults, 83% said their skin felt different in the winter –77% had problems with dryness, and 41% were bothered by itchiness.  Omega-7 from sea buckthorn berry and seed was shown to reduce dryness by 48%

Look for Vitamin D as D3 or cholecalciferol –the form found in the human body.  Take 5,000 IU daily, all year (not just in winter).

Look for Omega-7 from sea buckthorn berry and seed.  Take 500 mg up to 6 times daily.
