Researchers gathered diet information, including coffee consumption, from over 1,000 people with advanced colon cancer that could not be treated by surgery.
• Results: compared with people who drank no coffee, drinking a cup a day
– Increased overall survival by 11%
– Increased time before cancer progressed by 5%
• Results for those drinking four or more cups per day
– 36% overall increase in survival
– 22% increased rate of surviving without disease getting worse
• In this study, it didn’t make a difference if the coffee was regular or decaffeinated
• Coffee contains compounds with potent antioxidant and anti- cancer activity (polyphenols)
