Is There a Natural Cure and Prevention for Cancer?
I have been contemplating writing this blog for several months. I want to share my feelings regarding the medical treatment of cancer. I know there are many people and families affected by cancer with the suffering, misery and financial burden that affects almost everyone. I am not an expert in the treatment and prevention of cancer. I am not a physician nor do I hold any medical degrees. But, I have found it interesting that many medical experts share the same opinion that I am convinced is true about cancer treatment and cure. This blog is my attempt to share how even many medical experts disagree with the status quo. We are constantly encouraged to give to fundraising events to find a cure for cancer. It could be a marathon, a walk, or a motorcycle event. Millions of dollars annually are raised from well-intended and good hearted people. But I don’t believe we’ll ever find a cure for cancer with money and good intentions. Over 40 years ago, President Nixon said there would be a cure for cancer found in his lifetime. Well, we know that’s not true. Today, we are no closer to finding a cure or prevention for cancer than we were 40 years ago. Why have we not been able to find a preventive measure or cure for cancer?
Today, the methods to treat cancer seem barbaric and from the Dark Ages. Chemotherapy can constitute a single drug or a cocktail of six to eight different drugs. Some doctors refer to this as poisoning the body. Radiation is often used to kill cancer cells along with many healthy cells as well. Some medical experts refer to this as burning the body. When surgery is required, which is the least damaging; it is referred to as mutilation. These methods are used on desperately sick people fighting for their lives. Should anyone in a healthy state be subjected to poisoning, burning and mutilation, they would very quickly become ill and possibly succumb to the challenges of cancer. Some medical doctors and oncologists believe that the only way to treat cancer is to use these methods and they will not listen to the patient who may desire to include an alternative or a much lesser form of treatment than recommended by the physician. In some cases, cancer victims are dismissed by their physicians if they don’t follow the exact protocol of poisoning, burning and mutilation.
Could our lifestyle choices, including diet, be a preventive method and cure for cancer? I often find articles and research by very competent scientific researchers who are quick to point out that cancer is caused by our lifestyle choices. Cancer is not like a boogey man standing off in the shadows striking some unfortunate person. Most cancers are initiated and metastasize through a process that may take 30 to 40 years. When cancer is diagnosed, in most cases there is so much damage done that it is hard to overcome.
Cancer is big business. The cost of drugs and treatment keep many clinics, hospitals and physicians thriving. But not once will you hear the recommendation to make better lifestyle choices and to improve the diet. I have learned from many cancer patients that their doctors tell them to eat whatever they want, diet makes no difference.
It has been estimated that 30 percent of the cancer today is caused by tobacco products, 30 percent of the cancer today is caused by chemicals in our environment, preservatives, and artificial food coloring, dyes, and artificial flavoring found in our food all increase the risk of cancer. The wax and sprays on fruits and vegetables, the chemicals in plastics, plastic bottles and plastic wraps, the hormones and antibiotics given to animals are often found in our meats and milk. The genetically modified foods, and artificial fertilizers and sprays all increase the risk of cancer. It is estimated that there are 55 thousand chemicals in our food, drinks and the air we breathe. 40 percent of our cancer is estimated to be initiated by the American diet. 70 percent of the American diet is refined carbohydrates lacking the proper natural nutrients that would come from a natural, unprocessed diet. The sugar we consume has increased from approximately 6 to 8 pounds per person annually to 250 pounds per person annually. Since this is on a national average, many people who are avoiding sugar, and babies and children may eat less, therefore, there may be some people eating far upward of 250 pounds. Cancer cells thrive on glucose (sugar). As our cars are fueled by gas, cancer cells are fueled by sugar. The sicker we are and possibly challenged with an incurable disease such as MS, ALS, Parkinson’s or cancer, a number of medical researchers believe we should adopt the ketogenic diet. To learn more about the ketogenic diet go to www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com and www.drperlmutter.com. This is a diet that severely restricts carbohydrates and sugar and reduces calorie consumption. Even a healthy diet, but one that is excessive in calories, causes an increase of glucose in the body. Sugar is poison. Our cancer rates have skyrocketed along with a significant increase of sugar and refined carbohydrate consumption. The increased consumption of carbohydrates has come about by the unfounded fear of fats in our diet. There is a belief by many medical researchers that cancer can be prevented and maybe even cured by lifestyle changes. We have made little progress treating and curing cancer from the current medical procedures. And it is projected that by 2030 the number of new cancer cases will increase by 70 percent worldwide due to demographic changes alone. The significant rise is attributed to adoption of the Western lifestyle habits. These lifestyle factors are the major causes of disease globally and, combined with physicians’ tendencies to prescribe medication rather than prescribing a healthy lifestyle, have resulted in a global health crisis. By eating whole foods and an unprocessed diet low in calories, along with physical activity and the avoidance of tobacco products, you can significantly reduce the incidence of cancer. Fruits, vegetables, coffee, and herbal teas as well as several herbs and plants with diverse pharmacological properties have been shown to be rich sources of plant chemicals with potential for chemoprevention of various cancers. For example, getting 10 to 30 minutes of physical activity like walking reduces the risk of colon cancer by 55 percent. Colon cancer is the number one cancer globally that affects one out of every four people.
These are easy lifestyle changes that we can control and we can make an attempt to control the chemicals in our environment by avoiding foods and water with chemicals (chlorine and sodium fluoride) added. Based on competent scientific research, we know what causes cancer and we can control it.
But Big Pharma likes to sell pharmaceuticals and so-called cancer treating procedures that are tremendously costly in dollars and personal suffering. The national life expectancy average of a cancer victim after diagnosis is nine months. Merck has just been praised for what has been hailed as a major breakthrough for cancer treatment of a new drug that will increase life expectancy to 15 months. Yes, everyone wants to live longer but the drug companies offer us a few months more of life at a cost of personal suffering and a huge cost to Americans. We are being bankrupt by medical care that adds little to the quality and expectancy of life.
With cancer and many other diseases that do not have a cure, diet, physical activity and natural plant medicines may be a huge factor in prevention and, to some degree, treatment. Most cancer drugs are like an atomic bomb and many people die from the treatment than from the cancer. Cancer cells create a resistance to the drugs. There are two natural plant medicines that have over 11,000 studies shown to prevent and treat a variety of diseases. Research indicates that 80 to 90 percent of our diseases are caused by oxidative damage and inflammation. Curcumin and grape seed extract are two of the most powerful antioxidants in the prevention of oxidative damage and inflammation. The compounds found in grape seed extract and curcumin are natural components called polyphenolic antioxidants and are especially important since environmental pollutants, radiation, pesticides, certain drugs, contaminated water, deep fried fatty foods, excessive omega 6 fatty acids, and UV radiation as well as physical stress exhibit the ability to produce enormous amounts of free radicals which cause many diseases including tumor promotion and cancer. Drugs are not the answer. Food is our medicine and the only medicine along with natural plant derived medicines, especially curcumin and grape seed extract, which will have the biggest impact to restore our health.
Below is just a small example of one of the hundreds of studies done on grape seed extract and cancer. The results of the study indicated that grape seed extract caused cancer cell death and inhibited the spread of cancer to the lungs from the original breast cancer. Yes, this is a very small animal study and I can’t suggest that grape seed extract can cure or treat cancer. Some studies have suggested that, in a limited manner, it could have an effect killing cancer cells and reducing the spread of cancer. Studies have also suggested that using curcumin and grape seed extract with toxic cancer drugs could reduce the toxicity of the cancer drugs and make them more effective with a lesser dosage. Most oncologists insist that their patients avoid all natural products including vitamin supplements during treatment. I have talked to many cancer victims across the country who, without acknowledging to their physicians, were taking natural herbal medicines with significant improvement.
One family was told by their oncologist that their son, who was being treated for a brain tumor, was no longer able to be treated medically and had 4-6 weeks to live. The mother proceeded to give her son very large dosages of curcumin, and after 6-8 weeks the son was able to be active on a daily basis after being bedridden. The mother shared the recovery story with her physician who insisted on an MRI which indicated there was no longer a tumor present. Can we prove the curcumin was effective in treating the tumor? No, I don’t think so but I am convinced that curcumin and grape seed extract have as much potential as the toxic drugs that cancer patients are given. With the potential that these herbal medicines have, why are there not more studies conducted to prove their efficacy? Money and greed! The pharmaceutical industry has the millions of dollars that would be required to do studies to prove natural medicines have an effect. However, natural medicines can’t be patented and, therefore, the companies who have the money will not invest in studies for which they can’t recover their investment by charging huge sums of money for the potential natural medicine.
Grape seed proanthocyanidins induce apoptosis and inhibit metastasis of highly metastatic breast carcinoma cells.

The strategies available for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer are limited. Dietary botanicals may have a better protective effect on this disease. We therefore investigated the effects of grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) on a highly metastatic mouse mammary carcinoma cell line. In vitro treatment of breast cancer cells, 4T1, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468, with GSPs resulted in significant inhibition of cellular proliferation and viability, and induction of apoptosis(death) in 4T1 cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Further analysis indicated an alteration in the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 proteins in favor of apoptosis, and the knockdown of Bax using Bax siRNA transfection of 4T1 cells resulted in blocking of GSPs-induced apoptosis. Induction of apoptosis was associated with the release of cytochrome c, increased expression of Apaf-1 and activation of caspase 3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase. Treatment with the pan-caspase inhibitor (Z-VAD-FMK) resulted in partial but significant inhibition of apoptosis in 4T1 cells suggesting the involvement of both caspase activation-dependent and activation-independent pathways in the apoptosis of 4T1 cells induced by GSPs. The effects of dietary GSPs were then examined using an in vivo model in which 4T1 cells were implanted subcutaneously in Balb/c mice. Dietary GSPs (0.2 and 0.5%, w/w) significantly inhibited the growth of the implanted 4T1 tumor cells and increased the ratio of Bax:Bcl-2 proteins, cytochrome c release, induction of Apaf-1 and activation of caspase 3 in the tumor microenvironment. Notably, the metastasis(spreading of cancer cells) of tumor cells to the lungs was inhibited significantly and the survival of the mice enhanced. These data suggest that GSPs possess chemotherapeutic efficacy against breast cancer including inhibition of metastasis.
