Probiotics May Improve Immunity in Smokers
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study involving 72 healthy Italian blue-collar male smokers, supplementation with the probiotic, Lactobacillus casei Shirota (LcS) for a period of 3 weeks was found to be associated with significant increases in natural killer activity, which was paralleled by an increase in CD16+ cells. The authors conclude, "... 3 weeks of daily LcS intake in Italian male smokers was associated with a higher increase in cytotoxic activity and CD16+ cells' number in comparison to the placebo intake group."
