Presence of Coenzyme Q10 in Human Follicular Fluid
In a study involving 20 women experiencing infertility who were undergoing ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization, higher levels of coenzyme Q10/protein were found to be associated with mature, as opposed to dysmorphic, oocytes, and coenzyme Q10/cholesterol was found to be significantly higher in grading 1-II, as compared to grading III-IV embryos. The authors state, "This study is the first demonstration of the presence of CoQ10 in the human follicular fluid. Although the biological and endocrine mechanism of CoQ10 in the follicular fluid and its correlation with oocyte and embryo development is unclear, a new step may be the administration of CoQ10 in infertile women to evaluate the biological and reproductive outcomes."
