High Calorie Low Volume Oral Supplement Post-Surgery May Reduce Hospital Stay


In a study involving 55 patients undergoing elective colorectal resection surgery, supplementation with a high-calorie, low-volume nutritional supplement ("Pro-Cal" — 6 + 60 mls/d) in addition to the standard diet was found to be associated with significantly better total daily oral calorie intake and shorter post-operative hospital stay, as compared to standard diet alone. No significant differences in median days to first bowel movement or handgrip strength at discharge were found between the groups.
