Gut Microbiota of Healthy Elderly NSAID Users is Selectively Modified with the Administration of Synbiotics
Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics might modify the intestinal environment and stimulate the immune system of senior citizens. The authors examined the effects of symbiotic supplementation for intestinal health of healthy elderly volunteers. Over a two week period, subjects took either a synbiotic supplement consisting of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and the prebiotic lactitol (total daily dose of 10 g lactitol and 2 x 10(10) cells of probiotic bacteria) or were part of the control group which took a placebo twice a day. Researchers found an increase of bifidobacteria levels during synbiotic supplementation, suggesting improved intestinal health and an improved immune system.
