Efficacy of Vitamin C as an Adjunct to Fluoxetine Therapy in Pediatric Major Depressive Disorder

In a six-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 24 subjects, of which 12 received fluoxetine (10-20 mg/d) plus vitamin C (1000 mg/d) and 12 served as a control group and received fluoxetine plus a placebo, both for a period of 6 months, those who received vitamin C in addition to medication were found to have a significantly greater decrease in symptoms, assessed via the Children's Depression Rating Scale, in comparison to the fluoxetine plus placebo group. The authors conclude, "These preliminary results suggest that vitamin C may be an effective adjuvant agent in the treatment of MDD in pediatric patients."
