Critical Illness is Associated with Decreased Plasma Levels of Coenzyme Q10

In a study involving 32 critically ill patients and 18 healthy controls, plasma coenzyme Q10 levels were found to be lower in critically ill patients (0.50 microg/mL) in those with septic shock (0.37) and those without (0.56), as compared to healthy controls. The authors conclude, "Decreased plasma CoQ10 levels are not specific to patients with SS, but rather observed in a broad range of critically ill patients. In critically ill patients, CoQ10 insufficiency may be associated with various conditions; age may be a risk factor."
