A. Dear S.P., I believe that diet plays a crucial role when it comes to controlling IBS symptoms. Just like the majority of the chronic health conditions seen today, gastrointestinal issues like IBS have their roots in chronic inflammation. To address inflammation in the stomach and intestinal tract, we need to use a compound that can help modulate a certain kind of inflammation-promoting pathway, called 5-LOX (5-lipoxygenase). One of the best botanicals I know to control this type of inflammation is boswellia.
In addition to boswellia, there are other safe and effective herbal medicines that keep the intestines free of inflammation and digestion running smoothly. Oils of coriander, fennel, caraway seed, and peppermint all help to regulate digestion by controlling bacterial populations, relaxing the stomach lining, and helping to control the symptoms of IBS.
When choosing a boswellia extract, I believe an extract standardized for AKBA content (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) is essential. This is one of boswellia’s most powerful components, which is why it is so often the focus of research. However, there is another compound in boswellia that is actually pro-inflammatory, which is called beta-boswellic acid (BBA). The boswellia extract I recommend is standardized to high levels of AKBA and virtually free of BBA.
I would take a combination of boswellia, coriander, fennel, caraway seed, and peppermint with each meal.
For additional support, you may want to consider taking a combination of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum. I would take these once or twice per day.
You could also consider a combination of herbs that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda to support digestion and disease prevention. I would take a combination of turmeric, greater galangal, andrographis, boerhavia, Indian laburnum, gotu kola, cyperus, licorice, East Indian sarsaparilla, long pepper, chebulic myrobalan, Indian tinospora, ginger, and curry tree once or twice per day.
