What can I take to get my liver back on track?

Dear Terry, “I have been told I have a sluggish liver. What can I take to get my liver back on track?” — Shirley C., Fremont, CA

Dear Shirley, The liver is one of the body’s hardest-working organs, and it needs the right nutrients to function properly. I believe I can offer you some options. However, I do encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your physician, as they may have additional input.

I would highly recommend that you consider adding sesamin and milk thistle to your daily regimen.

You may not be familiar with sesamin, but it is one of the strongest nutrients available for restoring the liver and stopping liver damage. Sesamin, which comes from sesame seed, helps the liver in many ways, including stopping fibrosis (an accumulation of collagen and other proteins that can ultimately result in liver failure) and preventing fatty liver disease.

Milk Thistle is known as the “go to” botanical for liver health. Two key components in milk thistle – silymarin and silybin – are considered the most effective phytonutrients for restoring the liver. Silymarin is the main complex in milk thistle, and contains silybin, a powerful flavonoid that has very specific detoxifying abilities. Both work to protect liver cells against oxidative damage and enhance the strength and detoxification power of the liver. Unfortunately, silybin can be difficult for the body to absorb and use. When choosing a formula, look for one that features silybin bound to a phytosome. Clinical research shows that it can be present in the body for up to 8 hours when it is bound to a phytosome.

I recommend that you start by taking up to 390 mg of the sesamin and milk thistle twice daily. You can then reduce as desired.

Healthy Regards!

Terry . . . Naturally
