Q. Dear Terry, “What are your top choices for preventing cancer?” – Nathan P., Dover, DE
A. Dear Nathan, When it comes to cancer prevention and treatment, I think there are some incredibly safe and effective natural options. For anyone dealing with cancer or other chronic health conditions, I recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner, as they may have additional insight. With that being said, a few of my favorite anticancer botanicals include curcumin, boswellia, grape seed extract, and andrographis. Several of these botanicals have been studied together and the results have been even better than each botanical on its own.
Curcumin has been shown to stop cancer initiation, promotion, and progression. This means curcumin can stop the changes that cause normal cells to become cancerous cells. Published studies on curcumin’s anticancer activity (so far) have found that it can suppress breast, prostate, liver, skin, oral, colon and lung cancer. Curcumin has also been studied as an adjunct to conventional treatment and helps make the treatments more effective and decreases side effects. Additionally, it protects normal cells from the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs and radiation treatments. I prefer curcumin enhanced with turmeric essential oil. I recommend 750 mg of this curcumin, once or twice per day.
Boswellia contains many beneficial and anticancer compounds, including AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic-acid). Research has shown that AKBA can inhibit the growth of tumors in colorectal cancer cells. Through a process called DNA methylation, boswellia can “wake up” sleep genes that are designed to suppress tumor growth. High-AKBA boswellia stops the spread of cancer cells, lowers their chance of mutating and spreading, and reduces the survival of mutated cells that create tumors. An Egyptian cell study found that boswellia was comparable to doxorubicin and 5-fluorouracil – two commonly used chemotherapy drugs. The boswellia extract I recommend is standardized to high levels of AKBA and virtually free of beta-boswellic acid (a pro-inflammatory compound in boswellia). I recommend 500 mg of boswellia once or twice per day.
Grape seed extract can inhibit the growth of tumors, stop the cycle of cancer cell signaling, and induce apoptosis – the death of cancer cells by stopping the growth phase. But perhaps even more importantly, it also kills cancer stem cells. This is an amazing breakthrough because even though conventional chemotherapy can kill cancer cells, it leaves behind the cancer stem cells, which is a large contributor to cancer recurrence. The oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) from a unique grape seed extract eliminated the cancer cells and cancer stem cells. I prefer French grape seed extract with low-molecular weight OPCs that are well absorbed. I recommend 150 to 400 mg of French grape seed extract per day.
Lastly, andrographis has been researched for its ability to stop the growth of many cancer cells, including aggressive cancers such as pancreatic and glioblastoma. Overall, a recent review showed that a compound in andrographis, called andrographolide, stopped tumor replication in virtually every type of cancer tested. Andrographis addressed nearly every mechanism of cancer development, including inflammation, oxidation, cell replication, and cancer cell invasion. I recommend 400 mg of andrographis standardized to andrographolide content once per day.
