My wife contracted respiratory flu.


Dear Terry, “My wife contracted what we thought was this year's troublesome respiratory flu back in late November.  Now I'm concerned, as it has now been 12+ weeks, 3 different antibiotic treatments, and she still hasn't improved. She feels good towards the end of an antibiotic treatment session, but deteriorates rapidly after the treatment ends.  Do you have any recommendations?” — Tom M., Appleton, WI

Dear Tom, I do have some recommendations that your wife may find helpful.

I think diet is extremely important, so the best recommendation I can give anyone with an upper respiratory condition is to eat a diet that is very low in carbohydrates – no bread, pasta, crackers, cookies, cakes, pies, and no sugar or juice. Your wife should try and focus on eating good quality proteins, vegetables of the non-starchy variety, as well as low carb fruits and fats. In addition to modifying her diet, there are some natural ingredients that your wife may want to consider.

Your wife may want to consider adding nutrients such as elderberry (Sambucus nigra), vitamins A, C and D, along with calcium, magnesium, zinc, and bioflavonoids, to her daily regimen to help keep her immune system strong throughout the year. All of these ingredients have antiviral, antibacterial, or immune-supportive properties.

She may also want to consider extracts of thyme and climbing ivy. These two botanicals function as expectorants (helps cough out phlegm) and mucolytics (breaks up congestion). When used together they make a very excellent combination, helping to keep the lungs clear. Both herbs have been extensively researched in Germany and other European countries for use with colds, cough, bronchitis and even asthma. I suggest taking a total of 250-500 mg of these two ingredients three times a day.
