My stress levels have been sky-high lately and everything just seems to add to my frustration.
Q. Dear Terry, “My stress levels have been sky-high lately and everything just seems to add to my frustration. I am irritable, have very low energy, can’t sleep, and many other symptoms. I feel helpless, what can I do?” — Alex B., Carson City, NV
A. Dear Alex, Many of us are dealing with excessive amounts of stress on a daily basis – work, school, family, finances, and more. All of this stress may cause our adrenal glands to work overtime, leading to what is often called adrenal fatigue, or adrenal exhaustion. In cases of adrenal fatigue, the production of cortisol by the adrenal glands drops. This can lead to a lack of energy, weight gain, sugar cravings, and reliance on stimulants like caffeine to get moving every day.
While I do have some recommendations, I encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your healthcare practitioner, as they may have additional insight.
If you are not doing so already, I highly recommend taking a good look at your diet. I would recommend restricting all sugar and foods made with sugar, refined flour, and carbohydrates. That means soft drinks, sweetened and diet, crackers, candy, cookies, bread, pasta, cakes, and ice cream. While I understand this takes a huge effort, it can make a real difference. Click on my healthy diet plan for more information or watch my thyroid and adrenal webinar. For additional information, I also recommend checking out the following websites: www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com and www.drperlmutter.com. You should also read the books, Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.
In addition to modifying your diet, there are some natural ingredients that you may want to consider.
To function at their optimal level, the adrenals require an array of necessary nutrients. So, in order to support and repair the adrenals, I would first recommend adding DHEA, pregnenolone, adrenal extract, L-tyrosine, pantothenic acid, licorice, and rehmannia root extracts, along with vitamins B6 and C. These ingredients work together to help repair the adrenal glands, as well as support the body’s ability to respond to environmental stress in a healthy manner, which helps restore optimal adrenal function. I recommend taking these nutrients three times daily.
I also recommend taking two potent adaptogenic herbs: rhodiola and ashwagandha. Adaptogens work by increasing strength, stamina, and energy without being stimulants. I suggest taking these two herbs three times daily.
Please be patient – it may take several months, but you will feel a difference.
