My six-year-old son is very healthy, except for a cough he’s had for several weeks.

Q. Dear Terry, “My six-year-old son is very healthy, except for a cough he’s had for several weeks. He had COVID-19 and recovered within a few days. However, he still has this dry cough. My wife has been giving him tea with honey and that helps for a little while. Any other suggestions?” – Max D., Macon, GA

A. Dear Max, I think it’s important to keep your child’s pediatrician in the loop with any supplementation you may be doing, as they may have additional insight. With that being said, I have a few recommendations I think can really make a difference.

Coughs can be from a variety of conditions, such as bacterial or viral illnesses, asthma, and irritants (smoke, dust, etc.). Regardless of the cause, there is often irritation and inflammation of the bronchial tissue, which leads to coughing. Sometimes a cough can linger for weeks or months after an acute illness. To help support the lungs, I recommend two gentle, safe, and effective botanicals.

Thyme and climbing ivy work together to help calm troublesome coughs. Not only do they function as expectorants (help the body to cough out phlegm), but they are also mucolytics (break up congestion). Thyme and ivy are one of the most popular and commonly recommended herbal blends in Europe for dry, spasmodic coughs and, due to its overall safety, it is a favorite for treating coughs in adults and children. When taken together, they make a very excellent combination, helping to keep the lungs clear.

I would take 250 mg of these two ingredients several times a day. These same ingredients are also available in a liquid form.

Healthy Regards!
