My question is, what kind of omega-3 supplement do you give to your dog?

Q. Dear Terry, “I know you are a pet lover and have made recommendations for dogs in the past. My question is, what kind of omega-3 supplement do you give to your dog?” – Cathy R., Mobile, AL

A. Dear Cathy, Animals are a source of joy for myself and many other people. I think it’s important that pets and their guardians have adequate levels of healthy omega-3s. While some dog foods contain omega-3s, it’s highly likely that the omega-3s are rancid by the time our pets are eating their food. Decreased omega-3s in dogs can lead to dry skin and coat, delayed impulse control, joint issues, and other chronic conditions.

Cold-water fish have the highest, naturally occurring levels of omega-3s because of the environment they live in. I prefer omega-3 fatty acids from salmon, naturally bound to beneficial peptides and phospholipids, as this is much closer to nature and how these nutrients were meant to be absorbed and utilized. This is the way that omega-3s are delivered by eating fish – which means a big difference in stability and ability to transport omega-3s to where they are needed most.

Look for a 100 mg chewable omega-3 complex from salmon. You could give your dog one to two chewables per day depending on their size.

Healthy Regards!
