My PSA level was above normal at my last check-up.

Q. Dear Terry, “My PSA level was above normal at my last check-up. I would like to know what natural medicines could be used to help decrease my PSA level?” — Jacob P., Alberta, Canada

A. Dear Jacob, One of my top ingredients for prostate health is pomegranate. Pomegranates are a great source of omega-5 fatty acid (also called punicic acid), which is found in the seed oil. Punicic acid from pomegranate hasn’t received as much attention as pomegranate fruit or juice, but current research finds that omega-5 from pomegranate inhibits PSA and stops the growth of blood vessels that feed tumors. Beneficial compounds are found not just in the seed, but also in the fruit. To maximize the benefits from pomegranate, I recommend a seed oil standardized for punicic acid and fruit extract standardized for polyphenol content.

I think you would also benefit greatly by adding a strong, absorbable curcumin to your daily regimen. Curcumin can help prevent disease by targeting the underlying causes of disease itself: inflammation, oxidation, DNA damage, and the cell-signaling that makes tumors form and spread. I recommend a clinically studied curcumin that is blended with turmeric essential oil for better absorption, plus enhanced benefits from the turmerones in the extract.

Lastly, I also think that grape seed extract, milk thistle, and vitamin D3 would help with prostate health. Grape seed extract has been shown to kill prostate cancer cells by halting the inflammatory pathways that set them up to be cancerous. I recommend a French grape seed extract that is tannin-free and provides only low-molecular weight oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). Many people are familiar with milk thistle for liver health; one of the key compounds – silybin – actually has amazing abilities as a potential preventative and treatment for prostate cancer. Vitamin D3 is crucial for optimal health and has many benefits for the prostate.

Healthy Regards!
