A. Dear Christina, I encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your husband’s primary healthcare practitioner, as they may have additional input.
I think your husband could benefit greatly from adding vitamin B6, magnesium, and zinc to his daily regimen. Vitamin B6 acts as a “coenzyme.” A coenzyme is a molecule that works with an enzyme to aid it in fulfilling its job duties. Without the coenzyme, the enzyme would be useless. As a coenzyme, vitamin B6 assists in an amazing variety of tasks – including keeping the nervous system working smoothly. Magnesium is also extremely important for nervous system function. In fact, this mineral helps with muscle relaxation and resistance to nerve excitability. Zinc is also very important for muscle function and repair, and works synergistically with magnesium.
When looking for these ingredients, I strongly recommend choosing vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P), magnesium in the form of magnesium glycinate, and zinc in the form of zinc glycinate. P-5-P is the human form of vitamin B6. Many people (some estimate at least 30-50% of the population) cannot fully utilize B-vitamins from food and supplements because these forms of B vitamins must be converted into the active form before they will function. By using the form of vitamin B6 that is identical to the kind your body utilizes, you bypass the problem entirely. I also think using minerals, like magnesium and zinc, in their chelate forms greatly increases their absorption. Minerals can be hard to absorb so a chelate is a bond between a mineral (often called “inorganic”) and a molecule structure, called a “ligand” that helps the body absorb the mineral during digestion. Magnesium in the form of magnesium glycinate chelate is well-absorbed and does not cause loose stools or gastrointestinal upset, which can occur with other forms of magnesium.
I recommend taking 20 mg of vitamin B6 (as P-5-P), 200 mg of magnesium glycinate, and 10 mg of zinc glycinate, three times per day.
