My husband is starting to experience some short term memory loss.

Q. Dear Terry, “My husband is starting to experience some short term memory loss. It has become more noticeable over the past 6 months. Is there anything he should be taking that would help?” — Linda P., Lincoln, NE

A. Dear Linda, While I do have some recommendations, I encourage your husband to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with their physician as they may have additional input regarding a supplement regimen.

When it comes to maintaining optimal memory and mental function, making good decisions regarding exercise, food choices, and proven natural medicines can have a tremendous impact. Make sure your husband:

  • Stays in touch with friends and family – socializing and enjoying good company and conversation.
  • Stays physically active – exercising has huge benefits for your brain.
  • Does word searches and other puzzles. It can be fun, but also serves a purpose. In fact, studies have shown that keeping your brain engaged can help prevent Alzheimer’s.
  • Adopts a brain-healthy diet. For more specific information, review my diet at Terry’s Traditional Diet.

When it comes to natural medicines, I would recommend taking a combination of curcumin (an extract that comes from turmeric), vitamin D, and oils of rosemary and Spanish sage. Together, these ingredients have protective antioxidant effects for brain cells, as well as supporting memory and mental function. I recommend taking 1 or 2 softgels of this combination three times daily. Because standard curcumin is very poorly absorbed, make sure the product you choose features a curcumin with excellent absorption that has been proven in published human studies. The best form I have ever found uses curcumin blended with turmeric essential oils in a patented process. This curcumin has been shown in published human studies to be up to 10 times better absorbed than standard curcumin.

I also recommend a combination of bioactive B vitamins. This combination is excellent for healthy neurological function, and can also exert a mood balancing effect. Take one capsule of this combination daily. I recommend choosing a formula that features B6, B12, and folic acid in their active forms – P-5-P, methylcobalamin, and L-methylfolate. These forms don’t require conversion by the liver, so they can go to work immediately to increase energy levels, boost mood and optimize metabolism.

Healthy Regards!
