My husband has had a cough that produces a lot of loose phlegm for the past 2 months.

Dear Terry, “My husband has had a cough that produces a lot of loose phlegm for the past 2 months. The doctor has had him on two different antibiotics and nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions on what he could try? Much appreciated.” — Mary V., De Pere, WI

Dear Mary, I would encourage your husband to consider adding boswellia extract to his daily regimen. Boswellia is a specific inhibitor of 5-LOX, an enzyme that activates leukotrienes, which induce inflammation. Because it helps reduce inflammation, along with oxidative stress (free radical damage), boswellia is effective for a variety of health conditions. I recommend taking 500 – 1,000 mg of boswellia extract daily. Be sure to look for a boswellia extract that is standardized for AKBA (short for Acetyl-11-keto-β-Boswellic Acid), one of the most beneficial boswellic acids. It’s also important to find a boswellia extract that has filtered out the majority of beta-boswellic acid. Unlike most boswellic acids, beta-boswellic acid is actually pro-inflammatory. Removing it greatly enhances the potency of the boswellia extract.

In addition to the boswellia, I think he should also consider taking extracts of thyme and climbing ivy. These two botanicals help to clear the sinuses and reduce tissue irritation and inflammation. I suggest taking a total of 250 mg of these two ingredients several times a day. These same ingredients are also available in a liquid form that is a perfect option for children or anyone who prefers it to taking tablets.

Finally, I would also recommend Cinnamon, Thyme, Clove, and Oregano oils – some of nature’s most powerful antimicrobial ingredients - to help further boost the body’s natural defenses. I suggest taking a total of 75 mg of these oils several times daily. Make sure to choose concentrated plant oils that are approved for internal use. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.

Healthy Regards!
