My husband got a staph infection after a minor foot surgery.
Q. Dear Terry, “My husband got a staph infection after a minor foot surgery. I’m afraid his foot will now be in worse shape than it was before the surgery. Please help with any advice you may have. I don’t want him to lose his foot!” — P.C., Peoria, IL
A. Dear P.C., I strongly encourage your husband to discuss any supplementation with his primary healthcare practitioner. Staph infections can be very serious, even life-threatening. However, there are some natural compounds that have been shown to have strong antibacterial properties for numerous infections, including staph.
I think propolis is one of the best natural antibacterials, it is also antifungal and antiviral. Perhaps one of the most important uses of propolis today is fighting “superbugs”, which are antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Propolis is so powerful it can even stop methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Make sure your husband chooses a propolis that comes from a controlled and managed bee population so the material provides consistent levels of bacteria and virus fighting compounds. Look for a clinically studied propolis that is purified and contains no beeswax. I would take propolis three times a day for a month, then once a day thereafter.
To learn more about propolis, you can watch a short video (Propolis – Health from Nature) on the Terry Talks Nutrition YouTube channel.
I also believe that cinnamon, thyme, clove, and oregano oils—some of nature’s most powerful antibacterial ingredients—would help to further boost your husband’s natural defenses against infections. I would take these two or three times per day.
Look for concentrated plant oils that are approved for internal use. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity, and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
Additionally, probiotics can be very useful for any type of infection, especially when antibiotics are prescribed. Probiotics, which are the healthy bacteria, can be very useful for reestablishing bacteria balance. There are many probiotics on the market, but the kind I prefer are human strains, meaning they are found in our digestive system already. Three probiotic strains I recommend are Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum. I would take these once or twice daily.
