My doctor suggested that I take turmeric for my inflammation and arthritis.

Q. Dear Terry, “My doctor suggested that I take turmeric for my inflammation and arthritis.  She said 50 mg twice a day.  It's not doing much of anything - how much/what dosage would you recommend to take daily?” — Mary M., Green Bay, WI

A. Dear Mary, While turmeric is excellent when used as a spice, a highly absorbable curcumin extract is a better choice if you are trying to address a specific health concern (pain, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, etc.).

Turmeric is the plant that provides curcumin. A typical turmeric root contains about 2-5% curcumin, so taking an unstandardized, powdered turmeric root product means that very large amounts would be required to get a beneficial amount of curcumin. Additionally, curcumin is poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.

You would benefit greatly by adding a strong, absorbable curcumin to your daily regimen. I recommend taking 750 mg of high absorption curcumin twice daily. I highly recommend choosing a product that features a curcumin with excellent absorption that has been proven in published human studies. The best form I have ever found uses curcumin blended with turmeric essential oils in a patented process. This curcumin has been shown in published human studies to be up to 10 times better absorbed than standard curcumin.

Healthy Regards!
