My doctor diagnosed me with essential hand tremors.

Q. Dear Terry, “My doctor diagnosed me with essential hand tremors over 15 years ago.   Is there a natural supplement I can take that would help my condition?” —  Ray A., Kansas City, MO

A. Dear Ray, I believe I can offer you some alternative nutritional options. However, I encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your physician, as they may have additional input regarding a supplement regimen.

Vitamin B6 and magnesium are nutrients you may want to consider adding to your daily regimen. When looking for products, I strongly recommend choosing ones that feature vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxal-5-phospate (P-5-P) and magnesium in the form of magnesium glycinate. P-5-P is the biologically active form of vitamin B6. Many people (some estimate up to 30% of the population) cannot fully utilize B-vitamins from food and supplements because these forms of B-vitamins must be converted into the active form before they will function. By using the form of vitamin B6 that is identical to the kind your body utilizes, you bypass this problem entirely. In addition to optimizing vitamin B6 metabolism, magnesium in the glycinate form delivers a good dose of magnesium to help with muscle relaxation and resistance to nerve excitability. I recommend 60 mg of vitamin B6 (as P-5-P) and 200 mg of magnesium (as magnesium glycinate) twice daily.

I would also strongly recommend that you consider adding omega-3s to your regimen as they have been shown to help increase focus and attention. I prefer to get my omega-3 fatty acids from salmon, naturally bound to phospholipids, as this is much closer to nature and how people were meant to absorb and use these nutrients. This is the way you’d get your omega-3s by eating fish – in the natural sn-2 position, not the sn-1 position into which they are twisted when extracted in fish oil. This means a big difference in stability and ability to transport omega-3s to where they are needed most. Therefore, you only need a small amount compared to the handfuls of fish oil capsules or spoonsful of fishy tasting oils.

Healthy Regards!
