My daughter was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) about five years ago.

Q. Dear Terry, “My daughter was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) about five years ago. Her symptoms are pretty well controlled, but she can have flare ups that last several days or weeks. What are natural ways to help her RA?”– Tori M., Ontario, Canada

A. Dear Tori, I think diet can make a huge impact on our overall health, including autoimmune conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis. I believe it’s important to restrict all sugar and foods made with sugar, refined flour, and carbohydrates. That means soft drinks, sweetened and diet, crackers, candy, cookies, bread, pasta, cakes, and ice cream. While I understand this takes a huge effort, it can make a real difference. I highly encourage your daughter to discuss any supplementation with her healthcare practitioner or rheumatologist, as they may have further input. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition where the body’s own immune cells attack and destroy the lining of the joints (synovium). RA involves a lot of inflammation throughout the body and can cause warm and swollen joints, which may eventually lead to joint destruction.

Fortunately, curcumin has been shown in clinical studies to be an effective option for people with RA. One clinical study looked at the effects of curcumin with turmeric essential oil twice daily compared to 50 mg of the prescription drug diclofenac sodium twice daily, or a combination of curcumin and diclofenac in people with RA. The group receiving curcumin with turmeric essential oil had the greatest reduction in joint pain and swelling, with no adverse effects. In contrast, 14% of the participants in the drug group had to drop out due to adverse effects of the diclofenac.

I would take 750 mg of curcumin with turmeric essential oil twice daily.

Healthy Regards!
