My daughter is suffering from “chemo mouth” and is unable to eat regular food.
Q. Dear Terry, “My daughter is suffering from “chemo mouth” and is unable to eat regular food. Is there a natural product or rinse she can use to alleviate the sores and ulcers in her mouth?” — Peggy O., Colorado Springs, CO
A. Dear Peggy, I am sorry to hear about your daughter’s health struggles. While I do have some suggestions, I strongly recommend that your daughter consult with her healthcare practitioner, who can help her determine which supplements are best for her specific situation.
I believe your daughter would benefit greatly by adding Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) oil to her daily regimen. The fruit of the sea buckthorn, a hardy plant native to Europe and Asia, has been called a “nutrient bomb” because it is so rich in flavonoids, vitamins, and other beneficial compounds. The pulp contains exceptionally high omega fatty acids, including the rare Omega-7 fatty acid (palmitoleic acid). There are excellent studies demonstrating the ability of sea buckthorn oil, when taken internally, to help soothe mucous membranes. I recommend that she takes 1,000 mg twice daily until the problem is resolved, then reducing the dosage to 1,000 mg daily. In addition, she can also allow the oil to bathe the oral cavity.
When looking for a sea buckthorn product, make sure it contains BOTH the seed oil and pulp. While both extracts are healthy, only the pulp contains omega-7. Believe it or not, there are sea buckthorn products on the market that contain absolutely no omega-7 fatty acids! So this is definitely a case of buyer beware.
She may also want to consider adding a strong, absorbable curcumin to her daily regimen. I recommend taking 750 mg of high absorption curcumin twice daily. Keep in mind that standard curcumin is very poorly absorbed, so make sure the product she chooses features a curcumin with excellent absorption that has been proven in published human studies. The best form I have ever found uses curcumin blended with turmeric essential oils. This curcumin has been shown in published human studies to be better absorbed than plain curcumin.
