My daughter has been suffering from extremely dry, cracked and bleeding lips.
Q. Dear Terry, “My daughter has been suffering from extremely dry, cracked and bleeding lips. It does seem to coincide with a weather change to cooler weather but not extreme (New Mexico). She says that lip balms aren't making a difference. Is there a supplement that would make a difference for her?” — Rosemary B., Rio Rancho, NM
A. Dear Rosemary, I would recommend adding sea buckthorn oil to your daughter’s daily regimen. Harvested in the Arctic Circle, sea buckthorn is a hardy plant with a very high concentration of nutrients due to the fact that it grows in such a harsh environment. Sea buckthorn oil contains over 200 nutrients including vitamin E, beta-carotene, tocotrienols and a very rare form of essential fatty acid called Omega-7.
Sea buckthorn oil has been clinically shown to improve the hydration capabilities of the skin and mucous membranes, helping to alleviate dryness and facilitate skin healing. Dose is important when it comes to sea buckthorn oil – initially, she may want to start with two 500 mg capsules, taken internally, twice daily. As her lips improve, she may be able to reduce this to one 500 mg capsule twice daily, but have her play it by ear—if her lips start to get dry, she can always increase the dose again.
