Q. Dear Terry, “I’ve had warts on my hands since I was a teenager. After many topical treatments, they just keep coming back. What natural options are there?”– C.T., Los Angeles, CA
A. Dear C.T., Most warts are caused by a viral infection that attacks the top layer of skin. Therefore, the proper way to eliminate warts is to strengthen the body’s immune system so it can kill the virus naturally.
When it comes to dealing with viruses, one of my favorite natural remedies is elderberry. Elderberry can prevent viruses from entering cells, disrupt viral replication, and strengthen the immune system’s ability to handle viruses. Elderberry extract has been shown to be especially effective when combined with other nutrients, like vitamins and minerals.
In addition to elderberry, vitamins A, C, D3, and E are key for good immune function. Minerals are also central players in immune health and are often in short supply in our diets.
I would take 2,500 IU of vitamin A (as retinyl acetate), 200 mg of vitamin C (as ascorbic acid), 3,000 IU of vitamin D3 (as cholecalciferol), 15 IU of vitamin E (as d-alpha and mixed tocopherols), 41 mg of calcium (from calcium lactate), 6.7 mg of magnesium (as magnesium citrate), 15 mg of zinc (as zinc bisglycinate chelate), 150 mcg of selenium (from yeast), 50 mg of bioflavonoids from citrus, and 300 mg of elderberry fruit extract that is standardized to at least 12% anthocyanins daily.
Propolis would also be a great addition. Propolis is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral so it is a great choice for supporting the immune system. Make sure you use propolis that is purified to remove inactive resins and beeswax. I would take 200 mg of propolis once or twice per day.
Lastly, there’s research demonstrating that a compound from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.) called diindolylmethane (DIM) is effective for warts. DIM also has antiviral activity and has been used to treat plantar warts.
