Is there anything safe for dogs that can help decrease anxiety?
Q. Dear Terry, “I’m having a large get-together at my house next month. My small dog is really anxious around other people. Is there anything safe for dogs that can help decrease anxiety?” — Bobbie V., Owensboro, KY
A. Dear Bobbie, I encourage you to keep your dog’s veterinarian in the loop with any dietary supplementation, as they may have additional insight.
When it comes to addressing anxiety, I would recommend adding narrow-leaved coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) to your pet’s daily regimen. Researchers have discovered that compounds in this unique type of coneflower can help reduce anxiety as effectively as certain prescription medications, without the side effects.
I would give your dog this coneflower once or twice per day for a couple days to a week before the event. It is also safe enough to give to your dog on a daily basis. Make sure you look for a clinically studied, narrow-leaved coneflower root extract that is standardized for echinacosides.
