Q. Dear Terry, “I’m in my 30s and just started getting heartburn. The pain was so bad the first few times it happened; I thought I was having a heart attack! I’ve identified most of my food and beverage triggers and that has severely reduced the occurrence. What would be some other natural ways to further prevent heartburn?” – Kristin S., New York, NY
A. Dear Kristin, Heartburn pain can be extremely intense and you’re not the first person to mistake it for a heart attack. The “burning” sensation is caused by stomach acids overflowing from the stomach into the esophagus. Antacids work by decreasing or neutralizing our stomach acid. This may work in the short-term, but our stomach acid is necessary for many digestive functions. Stomach acid helps us break down food and also protects us from harmful bacteria.
One of the best ingredients to fight heartburn naturally is d-limonene. This clinically tested component of citrus oil is found in oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes. Although citrus fruits are typically associated with causing heartburn, d-limonene has been shown to help stop it.
Sea buckthorn is another important botanical ingredient for heartburn and works synergistically with d-limonene. It has a protective effect on the stomach and actually helps prevent and heal gastric ulcers. It soothes the mucosa in the digestive tract. Oils from the pulp and seeds of sea buckthorn are equally important. I prefer a sea buckthorn that has pulp and seed oil, plus phytosterols, tocopherols, and carotenoids.
I would take these ingredients two or three times per day.
