I was recently diagnosed with something called Raynaud’s disease.

Q. Dear Terry, “I was recently diagnosed with something called Raynaud’s disease. I don’t know much about it, other than my fingers sometimes turn really white. I’m trying to figure out what might trigger these episodes, but in the meantime, what can I take to help with this condition?” — Meela P., Seattle, WA

A. Dear Meela,  Raynaud’s disease is a disorder that affects blood vessels, mostly in the hands and feet. The blood vessels narrow, which decreases the flow of blood. This causes the hands and feet to feel very cold and numb. In most cases, this lasts for a short time when the body overreacts to cold temperatures or stress.

When it comes to Raynaud’s disease, I believe you would benefit greatly by adding mesoglycan and grape seed extract to your daily regimen.

Mesoglycan is a naturally occurring substance found in the body. Mesoglycan is an excellent source of glycosaminoglycans (also known as GAGs) – vital and necessary components that build the walls of our blood vessels and arteries. Other examples of GAGs include chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. Mesoglycan works on the actual formation of blood vessel walls, helping them to be strong, yet flexible, plus it helps keep blood moving through our arteries and blood vessels. I recommend taking mesoglycan from a porcine (pig) source twice daily.

In addition to the mesoglycan, you may also want to consider taking grape seed extract. Grape seed extract has vasodilating– blood vessel relaxing – properties. It also helps to protect the blood vessel walls from damaging free radical activity, which can contribute to circulation issues. I would recommend taking grape seed extract up to three times daily.

When looking for a grape seed extract, it is important to choose one that is standardized to contain only OPCs that are small enough to be absorbed, so you’ll get the maximum benefits. Many extracts contain tannins, which are too large to be effectively absorbed and don’t contribute to your health the same way that OPCs do. However, these tannins are counted as OPCs and enhance the label claim, even though they cannot be absorbed! Look for tannin-free French grape seed extract for maximum benefits.
