I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years ago.

Q. Hello Terry, “I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a few years ago. I struggle constantly with pain, fatigue, memory issues, emotional disturbances, and low energy. I would love your guidance to help improve my quality of life.” — Karly L., Milwaukee, WI

A. Dear Karly, Fibromyalgia is a complex disease and I think it requires a comprehensive treatment plan. One of my dear friends, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, has studied fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) for his entire medical career. After suffering from fibromyalgia and CFS himself during medical school, Dr. Teitelbaum has since been dedicated to finding an effective treatment for everyone. His protocol is called S.H.I.N.E. and involves making changes in sleep, hormones, infections, nutrition, and exercising as able. He recently did a webinar on fibromyalgia and you can view it on the Terry Talks Nutrition YouTube page (www.youtube.com/terrytalksnutrition).

To address the pain, I believe curcumin and boswellia are very useful. Curcumin is derived from turmeric and has been shown in numerous studies to effectively relieve pain. Combined with curcumin, boswellia has been shown to relieve osteoarthritis pain better than prescription drugs. And because curcumin and boswellia are such power anti-inflammatories, they don’t just stop pain, but also stop the actual damage in joints and muscles.

There are other compounds in turmeric that can also help with your symptoms. Turmeric essential oil contains turmerones and scientific studies have shown they have positive effects on proper brain functioning and stopping inflammatory processes in the brain. Turmerones can also increase a compound called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which is able to increase the amount of new brain cells. People with depression and mood issues often have low levels of BDNF and high levels of inflammation, and fortunately turmerones can help with both.

Another natural medicine from boswellia is frankincense oil. Scientific studies have shown that frankincense oil can help balance cortisol levels and also boost BDNF. Frankincense is also a powerful anti-inflammatory and helps to regulate our HPA axis in a way that prevents stress, anxiety, and emotional fatigue from taking hold.

Protein is also very important for optimal energy, pain relief, muscle retention, and any type of physical activity and fast recovery. I believe a high quality protein supplement is important for anyone with fibromyalgia or CFS. Whey is a good choice, especially when it contains both the isolate and concentrate forms. Whey protein that is combined with pain-fighting curcumin, boswellia, and ginger offers even greater benefits.

I recommend taking a combination of curcumin, boswellia, turmeric essential oil, and frankincense oil twice per day. You should also consider taking whey protein two to three times daily. For even more pain-relieving potential – combine curcumin, boswellia, and ginger with whey.

Healthy Regards!
