I was born with IBS and have been struggling with it my whole life.

Q. Hello Terry, “I was born with IBS and have been struggling with it my whole life. I alternate between severe constipation and diarrhea. What can be done to help?” — Michele B., Las Vegas, NV

A. Dear Michele, I believe that diet plays a crucial role when it comes to controlling IBS symptoms. If you’re not doing so already, I highly recommend avoiding all refined carbohydrates, grains, sugars, and soft drinks. Click on my healthy diet plan or healthy fats webinar for more information. For additional information, I also recommend checking out the following websites: www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com and www.drperlmutter.com. You should also read the books, Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.

In addition to the changes in the diet, I believe I can offer you some alternative nutritional options that will provide some relief. As always, I encourage you to discuss any supplement usage with your primary healthcare practitioner.

Just like the majority of the chronic health conditions seen today, gastrointestinal issues like IBS, have their roots in chronic inflammation. To address inflammation in the stomach and intestinal tract, we need to use a compound that can help modulate a certain kind of inflammation-promoting pathway, called 5-LOX (5-lipoxygenase). One of the best botanicals I know to control this type of inflammation is boswellia.

Make sure you choose a boswellia that has been filtered to reduce the beta-boswellic acid content. Most compounds in boswellia have healthy anti-inflammatory activities, but beta-boswellic acid is actually pro-inflammatory. Removing this compound greatly enhances the potency of the boswellia extract. You also want a boswellia extract that includes at least 10% of AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), which is the most active anti-inflammatory component of boswellia.

In addition to boswellia, there are other safe and effective herbal medicines that keep the intestines free of inflammation and digestion running smoothly. Oils of coriander, fennel, caraway seed, and peppermint all help to regulate digestion by controlling bacterial populations, relaxing the stomach lining, and helping to control the symptoms of IBS.

I would take a combination of boswellia, coriander, fennel, caraway seed, and peppermint with each meal.

For additional support, you may want to consider taking a combination of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum. I would take these once or twice per day.

Healthy Regards!
