I want to start taking something that will help prevent me from getting sick.

A. Dear Courtney, Defending ourselves against bacteria and viruses means we need to strengthen our immune system. There are many factors that can play a role in suppressed immune function like stress, diet, and exercise. I believe a diet full of healthy fats, protein, and fresh fruits and vegetables is a must. You could try adding more immune supportive foods like garlic, clove, turmeric, and grass-fed beef. Managing stress is also very important because stress can impair our adrenal function. Our adrenal glands are the only place in the body we store excess vitamin C, so extra stress means lower levels of vitamin C. Exercise helps to eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses from our body and decreases the release of stress hormones.

Aside from lifestyle factors, I do believe there are some natural medicines that you can take every day to stay healthy.

One of my favorite ingredients for preventing or treating a cold or flu is elderberry. Elderberry acts against viruses by neutralizing the virus particles so they cannot enter your cells and it helps with immune system activation, which can help control the spread of viral infections. The elderberry I recommend is very safe and can be taken daily.

I think propolis is also great to take on a daily basis. Propolis is rich in compounds like polyphenols, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antifungal and antibacterial flavonoids. With so many naturally-occurring compounds, it’s no wonder that propolis has such broad-reaching effects in the body. Propolis has been studied for its antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-tumor effects.

Lastly, I think vitamin D is necessary for the optimal functioning of our immune system. I would take 2000-5000 IU of vitamin D3 on a daily basis.
