A. Dear Jessie, I think diet can make a huge impact on our overall health, including adrenal function. I believe it’s important to restrict all sugar and foods made with sugar, refined flour, and carbohydrates. That means soft drinks, sweetened and diet, crackers, candy, cookies, bread, pasta, cakes, and ice cream. While I understand this takes a huge effort, it can make a real difference. You should also read the books, Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.

Chronic stress places extra demands on our adrenal glands, which can cause adrenal dysfunction. To function at their optimal level, the adrenals require an array of necessary nutrients. To support and repair the adrenals, natural ingredients like DHEA, pregnenolone, adrenal extract, L-tyrosine, pantothenic acid, licorice, and rehmannia root extracts, along with vitamins B6 and C, are incredibly beneficial. These ingredients work together to help repair the adrenal glands, as well as support the body’s ability to respond to numerous stressors in a healthy manner, which helps restore optimal adrenal function. I recommend taking these nutrients three times daily.

I also recommend taking two potent, adaptogenic herbs: rhodiola and ashwagandha. Adaptogens work by increasing strength, stamina, and energy without being stimulants. I suggest taking these two herbs three times daily.

Additionally, you may also want to consider red ginseng to help improve energy levels. Ginseng is one of the world’s older adaptogens and can help with physical and mental energy. I prefer ginseng that is cultivated using hydroculture techniques, which helps increase the levels of naturally occurring and highly sought after compounds, called noble ginsenosides. I would take ginseng once or twice per day.
