I think that I probably have a lot of inflammation in my body due to my diet and lack of exercise.


Q. Dear Terry, “For most of my life, I haven’t lived very healthy. I’ve been reading a lot about chronic inflammation and how it can cause disease. I think that I probably have a lot of inflammation in my body due to my diet and lack of exercise. What should I do?” — Marv P., Renton, WA

A. Dear Marv,  As you mentioned, chronic inflammation is largely affected by our diet and lifestyle. First and foremost, I think diet and exercise should be considered to help reduce inflammation. I would start by eliminating refined sugar and carbohydrates, and I highly recommend trying the ketogenic diet. You should also read the books, Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.

Inflammation is a normal response in the body to a type of injury or trauma and resolves quickly. That is what we call acute inflammation. However, if the body is under constant assaults from diet, toxins, stress, environment, lack of exercise, and many other factors, the inflammatory process can become chronic. Chronic inflammation can occur anywhere in the body and has been shown in scientific research to be behind the majority of chronic diseases seen today.

When it comes to chronic inflammation, I think curcumin enhanced with turmeric essential oil can be incredibly useful. Curcumin is perhaps one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory substances on the planet. Curcumin is able to modulate just about every inflammatory pathway in our body. While many people think of inflammation as a single entity, it is actually the result of hundreds of pathways each creating inflammatory substances. Fortunately, curcumin is able to reign in this excessive inflammation and help the body return to more normal functioning.

Because curcumin is poorly absorbed, I prefer a curcumin that is enhanced with turmeric essential oil. This form of curcumin has been the subject of numerous scientific studies, including clinical trials that demonstrate its benefits in people. I would take this curcumin twice per day.
