I take glucosamine sulfate for my osteoarthritis, but lately it hasn’t seemed to help.

Q. Dear Terry, “I take glucosamine sulfate for my osteoarthritis, but lately it hasn’t seemed to help. I have been feeling so stiff in the morning and it doesn’t go away until the afternoon. Do you have any ideas?” — Shane B., Jersey City, NJ

A. Dear Shane, Glucosamine sulfate (GS) is a great alternative to harmful over-the-counter and prescription drugs. However, after researching this topic for many years, I can recommend several herbal ingredients that are far more effective than GS.

Three of these herbs come from India and one from South Africa. The first and foremost ingredient I recommend for relieving pain and improving joint function is a clinically studied, highly absorbable curcumin blended with turmeric essential oil.

The second Indian herb, boswellia, has been used for thousands of years to relieve pain and inflammation. Its actions are very similar to the current drugs that are reported to be COX-2 inhibitors – but without the side effects.

Curcumin and boswellia are two key players in the combination you want, because they reduce the activity of the two most significant pain pathways in the body – COX-2 and 5-LOX. Of course, it’s not just about relieving pain – it’s about relieving the underlying inflammation that contributes to tissue damage and pain. That’s why these two ingredients are so important – they don’t just cover up the pain signals, they help the body heal.

The third herb, Indian Gooseberry, known as “amla”, also has anti-inflammatory benefits and helps rebuild healthy collagen and cartilage.

The last ingredient, Devil’s Claw, comes from South Africa where it has been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory for centuries by the native people. Devil’s Claw has been clinically studied and shown to build up the joint structure by increasing hyaluronic acid synthesis in the chondrocytes – the cells that produce and maintain joint-cushioning cartilage. This has amazing benefits for anyone with arthritis because it can improve joint lubrication by up to 41%!

I would take these four ingredients once or twice per day.

For additional pain management, you could also include a combination of curcumin, boswellia, DLPA and nattokinase.

Healthy Regards!
