Q. Dear Terry, “I have thick sinus drainage into my throat which causes me to get coughing spells. Do you have some suggestions?” — Mark R., Appleton, WI
A. Dear Mark, When it comes to your sinuses, I would first recommend trying eucalyptus and myrtle oils. Eucalyptus oil helps decongest the sinuses, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has been traditionally used to treat runny nose, cough, and sore throat. Myrtle essential oil has been well-studied and sold in Europe for more than 75 years. These are two oils that I strongly value for natural treatment of sinusitis and sinus infection. I suggest taking 160-320 mg total of these two oils up to three times daily.
For even more sinus relief, you may want to consider adding lemon oil for additional sinus-clearing power. I recommend taking 325-975 mg of the extra-strong sinus combination daily.
When choosing a formula, make sure to choose concentrated plant oils that are approved for internal use. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
You may also want to consider extracts of thyme and climbing ivy. These two botanicals function as expectorants (helps cough out phlegm) and mucolytics (breaks up congestion). When used together they make a very excellent combination, helping to keep the lungs clear. Both herbs have been extensively researched in Germany and other European countries for use with colds, cough, bronchitis and even asthma. I suggest taking a total of 250-500 mg of these two ingredients three times a day. These same ingredients are also available in a liquid form that is a perfect option for children or anyone who prefers it to taking tablets.
