I have some arthritis and stiff joints, especially in the morning.

Q. Dear Terry, “I have some arthritis and stiff joints, especially in the morning. It takes me a while to get up and going. My ankles and knees seem to be bothering me the most. My mom had osteoarthritis and I think that might be what I’m experiencing too. Any herbal support you can recommend?” — Marisa S., Round Rock, TX

A. Dear Marisa, Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in the United States and is often treated with potentially dangerous prescription drugs. However, I believe there are natural medicines that can be equally as effective (or even more effective) as prescription medications, but without the side effects.

Two of these herbs come from India and one from South Africa. The first and foremost ingredient I recommend for relieving pain and improving joint function is a clinically studied, enhanced absorption curcumin blended with turmeric essential oil. The second Indian herb, boswellia, has been used for thousands of years to relieve pain and inflammation.

Curcumin and boswellia were shown in a human clinical study to outperform the number one prescription medication for osteoarthritis of the knee. In this study, group one received celecoxib (100 mg) twice daily, while the second group received a 500 mg blend of boswellia and curcumin. The herbal group experienced greater reductions in pain and a more significant improvement in their OA overall. In the herbal group, 64 percent versus 29 percent in the drug group improved so much that they were able to move from having “moderate to severe arthritis” to “mild to moderate arthritis.” A more recent study involving curcumin demonstrated it was just as effective as the drug diclofenac sodium (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory). The curcumin group also experienced significantly less flatulence. Additionally, almost 30% of the drug group had to take an H2 blocker for stomach acid symptoms.

The last ingredient, Devil’s Claw, comes from South Africa where it has been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory for centuries. Devil’s Claw has been clinically studied and shown to build up the joint structure by increasing hyaluronic acid synthesis in the chondrocytes – the cells that produce and maintain joint-cushioning cartilage – by up to 41%. This has amazing benefits for anyone with arthritis

I would take these three ingredients once or twice per day.

Healthy Regards!
