I have several large varicose veins in both legs.
Q. Dear Terry, “I have several large varicose veins in both legs. They are very painful, not to mention they make my legs look terrible. My legs also tend to feel tired and very heavy a majority of the time. Lately, it’s been difficult to go for walks because I feel like I can't move them as fast as I would like. My doctor wants me to have my varicose veins surgically removed, but I really do not want to have surgery. Do you know of anything I could take that might help?” — Kathy D., Allentown, PA
A. Dear Kathy, I do have a few options that you may find helpful. However, I strongly encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your physician, as they may have additional input regarding a supplement regimen.
I believe you would benefit greatly by adding a combination of red vine leaf extract and butcher’s broom to your daily regimen. Red vine leaf extract contains anthocyanins, in addition to a range of other protective polyphenols, and has been clinically proven to relieve the pain and swollen legs associated with varicose veins. Butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is also extremely well known for treating varicose veins. Together, these two powerful botanicals have the ability to strengthen the veins of the legs and can help stop the pain and swelling you are experiencing. I recommend taking 1 capsule of this blend twice daily. When looking for a formula, make sure to choose one that contains red vine leaf and butcher’s broom that are standardized for their active compounds.
Another excellent supplement is mesoglycan, a naturally occurring substance found in the body. Mesoglycan is an excellent source of glycosaminoglycans (also known as GAGs) - vital and necessary components that build the walls of our blood vessels and arteries. Other examples of GAGs include chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. Mesoglycan works on the actual formation of blood vessel walls, helping them to be strong, yet flexible, plus it helps keep blood moving through our arteries and blood vessels. I recommend taking 100 mg of mesoglycan daily.
Keep in mind that while you may start to see changes within several weeks – you need to be patient – it may take up to 3-6 months to see full benefits. Good luck!
