A. Dear Sue, I applaud the proactive steps you are taking to optimize your health. I am glad to say I do have some recommendations. However, I strongly encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your healthcare practitioner. I think the best health outcomes are achieved when all those involved are in the loop and cooperating.
I believe you would benefit greatly by adding a strong, absorbable curcumin to your daily regimen. I recommend taking 750 mg of high absorption curcumin twice daily. Keep in mind that standard curcumin is very poorly absorbed, so make sure the product you choose features a curcumin with excellent absorption that has been proven in published human studies. The best form I have ever found uses curcumin blended with turmeric essential oils in a patented process. This curcumin has been shown in published human studies to be up to 10 times better absorbed than standard curcumin.
You may also want to consider adding a clinically studied, uniquely standardized boswellia extract. Boswellia is a specific inhibitor of 5-LOX, an enzyme that activates leukotrienes, which induce inflammation. Because it helps reduce inflammation, along with oxidative stress (free radical damage), boswellia is effective for a variety of health conditions. I recommend taking 500 mg of this unique boswellia extract twice daily.
Be sure to look for a boswellia extract that provides 500 mg of Boswellia serrata gum resin extract standardized to contain 70% total organic and boswellic acids with 10% AKBA. It’s also important to find a formula that features a boswellia extract that has filtered out the majority of beta-boswellic acid. Unlike most boswellic acids, beta-boswellic acid is actually pro-inflammatory. Removing it greatly enhances the potency of the boswellia extract – look for an extract that contains 5% or less beta-boswellic acid. This is the right ratio for a strong – yet natural – boswellia extract.
I also strongly recommend supplementing with vitamin D because it plays such a crucial role in multiple health issues. There are two forms of vitamin D used in supplements. Vitamin D2 is the form of vitamin D synthesized by plants. It is also known as ergocalciferol. Cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3, is the form that is produced by the human body. Both D2 and D3 can increase circulating vitamin D levels, although many people prefer to use the D3 form as it is closer to what is already found in the body. I recommend taking 5,000-10,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 daily.
In addition to the natural ingredients mentioned above, you may also want to consider modifying your diet. If you are not doing so already, I highly recommend taking a good look at your diet. Dietary restrictions would include avoiding all gluten and soy products. I would also recommend restricting carbohydrates and sugar to less than 50 grams per day.
