Q. Dear Terry, “I have been suffering from an outbreak of hives for a few weeks. After visiting multiple doctors, I still don’t have any answers. I’m hoping you can provide me with a natural solution. Thank you kindly.” — Betsy K., Lawton, OK
A. Dear Betsy, I think diet is incredibly important when it comes to overall health. I would start by removing dairy products (with the exception of cream, butter, and eggs), sugar, soft drinks, and all grains from your diet. Your diet should consist of animal proteins from beef, bison, lamb, poultry, and fish, with non-starchy vegetables and fruits. You can also eat nuts, seeds, and berries. While I understand this takes a huge effort, it can make a real difference. For more information, you can review my diet here or watch my webinar. For additional information, I also recommend visiting the following websites: www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com and www.drperlmutter.com. You should also read the books, Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.
I believe you could benefit greatly by adding a boswellia extract to your daily regimen. Boswellia is a specific inhibitor of 5-LOX, an enzyme that activates leukotrienes, which induce inflammation. Because it helps reduce inflammation, along with oxidative stress (free radical damage), boswellia is effective for a variety of health conditions. I recommend choosing a boswellia extract that is standardized to 70% or more of the beneficial boswellic acids, including at least 10% AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic-acid) – the most beneficial compound in boswellia. While most boswellic acids are healthy, there is a compound called beta-boswellic acid which can actually promote inflammation (the last thing you want when recovering from activity), so make sure the boswellia you choose is also standardized to less than 5% beta-boswellic acids. I recommend taking this unique boswellia extract one to two times daily.
I also think calcium lactate can be very helpful. While more well-known for its ability to protect bones, calcium also protects soft tissue from conditions such as rashes, sun burn, fever blisters, cold sores, and cold and flu. Making sure your body gets optimal amounts of calcium will help protect the soft tissue from being damaged. I recommend taking calcium lactate combined with magnesium and zinc three times daily.
For additional support, you may also want to consider a highly absorbable curcumin enhanced with turmeric essential oil. I would take this curcumin twice daily.
