A. Dear Mark, I think diet is incredibly important for improving overall health, including sinus issues. I would start by removing dairy products (with the exception of cream, butter, and eggs), sugar, soft drinks, and all grains from your diet. Your diet should consist of animal proteins from beef, bison, lamb, poultry, and fish, with non-starchy vegetables and fruits. You can also eat nuts, seeds, and berries. In addition to modifying your diet, there are some natural ingredients that you may want to consider.
When it comes to your sinuses, I think eucalyptus and myrtle oils are very powerful natural medicines. Eucalyptus oil helps decongest the sinuses, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has been traditionally used to treat a runny nose, cough, and sore throat. Myrtle essential oil has been well-studied and sold in Europe for more than 75 years. These are two oils that I strongly value for natural treatment of sinusitis and sinus infection. I suggest taking these two oils up to three times daily.
Make sure to choose concentrated plant oils that are approved for internal use. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity, and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
I think you should also consider adding nutrients like elderberry (Sambucus nigra), vitamins A, C, and D, along with calcium, magnesium, zinc, and bioflavonoids, to your daily regimen to help keep your immune system strong throughout the year. Together, these ingredients have antiviral, antibacterial, and immune-supportive properties.
For additional support, you could also try propolis. Often times, sinus infections can have a fungal component to them and fortunately propolis is a great antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral. Look for a clinically-studied form of propolis that is free of beeswax for enhanced absorption.
