I have been struggling with a Candida infection for several years.
Q. Dear Terry, “I have been struggling with a Candida infection for several years. I have tried to make some dietary changes, but I still have some work to do in that department. Sometimes it gets better, but then I get stressed or sick and it comes back with a vengeance. Do you have any suggestions for supplements or diet to improve my condition?” — Shirley M., Manchester, NH
A. Dear Shirley, Candida albicans (more often referred to as simply Candida) is a naturally occurring type of yeast that lives in your body. It generally doesn’t cause trouble unless it starts to grow and spread out of control. While your body has systems in place to keep Candida in check, they can get out of balance, thus allowing a window of opportunity for Candida to spread like wildfire.
Diet is an extremely important factor when it comes to Candida. You would do better with more proteins and fats, and less carbohydrates and sugar in your diet. So, the best recommendation I can give anyone with Candida is to start a very low carbohydrate diet – remove sugar and all grains from your diet. While I understand this takes a huge effort on your part, it can make a real difference. Click on my healthy diet plan for more information. For additional information, I also recommend checking out the following websites: www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com and www.drperlmutter.com. You should also read the books, Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.
In addition to the dietary recommendations, I think you should also consider adding concentrated essential plant oils like Ravintsara, Thyme, Eucalyptus, and Clove. All of these oils are very good at killing off the excessive yeast that is causing you problems. I recommend taking 200 mg total of these four essential oils twice daily. Once you no longer have yeast issues, you can reduce your dose to once daily.
I would also recommend Cinnamon, Thyme, Clove, and Oregano oils—some of nature’s most powerful ingredients—to help further boost the body’s natural defenses against Candida. I suggest taking a total of 75 mg of these oils three times daily.
Make sure to choose concentrated plant oils that are approved for internal use. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity, and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
For additional support, you could also take 200 mg of propolis per day, and continue with 100 mg per day for maintenance.
