I have been hearing a lot about hemp and its health benefits.
Q. Dear Terry, “I have been hearing a lot about hemp and its health benefits. I have been cancer-free for over five years and wonder if hemp would be a good addition to my daily routine?” — Liza R., Bozeman, MT
A. Dear Liza, I highly encourage you to discuss any supplementation with your primary healthcare practitioner. With that being said, I believe that hemp oil can be very useful for a wide variety of health concerns.
I think one of the biggest points of clarification when discussing hemp is that hemp and marijuana are not the same thing. By definition, hemp is virtually free of psychoactive THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the primary compound responsible for the euphoria of marijuana. The hemp plant, Cannabis sativa, contains a full range of other compounds called cannabinoids (including cannabidiol – popularly known as CBD), that affect the brain and body in very positive ways without impairing focus or concentration.
For years, both researchers and patients have experienced amazing benefits from hemp oil for everything from reducing seizures to stopping tumors. Compounds in hemp, called phytocannabinoids, have been shown to kill cancer cells and inhibit the spread of tumors without affecting healthy cells. For instance, CBD has been demonstrated to fight glioblastoma, a difficult-to-treat type of brain tumor. Scientific research has also found that CBD also stops leukemia cells, while other work has found that a full range of cannabinoids inhibited prostate cancer cells, highlighting the value of a complete entourage of compounds from hemp. As we learn more, it’s likely that cannabinoids from hemp could be considered an adjunct therapy for a variety of cancers.
Hemp oil compounds, including CBD, have a lot to offer. But you have to be careful which kind you choose. It’s easy to think that only CBD is important, but hemp oil is complex, and the other non-THC phytocannabinoids are valuable. The best hemp oil provides a full entourage of compounds from the stalk, which is important because these compounds work together more strongly than any one single compound on its own.
I prefer European, non-GMO hemp from specifically cultivated plants that are carefully tended in order to deliver maximum health benefits. I would take this once or twice daily.
Additionally, I think curcumin is one of the most valuable anticancer natural medicines in the world. I would also take curcumin enhanced with turmeric essential oil once or twice daily.
