I have anxiety attacks almost every day.

Q. Dear Terry, “I have anxiety attacks almost every day. I don’t want to take prescription medications as there are so many side effects. Do you know of any natural options that might help?” — Rosie W., San Francisco, CA

A. Dear Rosie, I am glad to say I do have some recommendations. However, I would encourage you to talk with your doctor and see what they think.

I recommend adding narrow-leaved coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia) to your daily regimen. Researchers have discovered that when taken at the right dosage level, compounds in this unique type of coneflower can help reduce anxiety as effectively as certain prescription medications, without the side effects. These compounds have been shown to attach to certain brain receptors, which helps to instill a sense of calm and relaxation.

I recommend taking 20-40 mg of coneflower extract twice daily. When choosing a formula, make sure you look for a clinically studied, narrow-leaved coneflower root extract that is standardized.

In addition, you may also want to consider adding two adaptogenic herbs: ashwagandha and rhodiola. Adaptogens work by increasing strength, stamina, and energy without being stimulants. I suggest taking these two herbs three times daily.

Healthy Regards!
