I have a bad case of thrush.
Q. Dear Terry, “I have a bad case of thrush. My doctor prescribed a prescription medication, but it has not been effective. Do you have any recommendations?” — Dee R., Gainesville, FL
A. Dear Dee, Thrush is caused by Candida albicans, a naturally occurring type of yeast that lives in your body. Candida generally doesn’t cause trouble unless it starts to grow and spread out of control. While your body has systems in place to keep Candida in check, they can get out of balance, thus allowing a window of opportunity for Candida to spread like wildfire.
There is some evidence that this family of yeasts particularly like to eat sugar, and thrive in its presence. Therefore, many integrative medical practitioners recommend that individuals with recurrent problems with thrush and/or vaginal yeast infections greatly limit simple sugars and refined carbohydrates (like white flour, white pasta, white rice) in the diet in an attempt to reduce the growth of this troublesome microorganism. For a more detailed look at an effective diet that works, please see my article, Terry’s Traditional Diet.
You may also want to consider adding natural ingredients to help enhance your overall immune health. The ideal way to balance yeast in the body is to use a concentrated essential plant oil blend consisting of Ravintsara, Thyme, Eucalyptus, and Clove. All of these oils are very good at killing off the excessive yeast that are causing you problems. I recommend taking one softgel three times daily. Once you no longer have yeast issues, you can reduce your dose to once per day.
When choosing formulas, make sure they feature concentrated plant oils that have been laboratory tested to accurately identify elements of their natural chemical composition. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
