I had 4 large uterine fibroids surgically removed approximately 2 years ago.


Dear Terry, “I am a 35 year old female. I had 4 large uterine fibroids surgically removed approximately 2 years ago. Following the surgery, I experienced a rapid weight loss of about 20 pounds and the symptoms I experienced prior to the surgery (very heavy menstrual cycles, fatigue, pressure in the abdomen and frequent urge to urinate) disappeared. Now, those same symptoms have returned. I do not wish to undergo another surgery. Do you have any guidance on other alternatives (i.e., changes in diet, supplements, etc.) that may shrink the fibroids and put me back on the road to a normal life?” — Carrie C., Sioux Falls, SD

Dear Carrie, I do have some options that I believe can make a difference. However, I strongly encourage you to discuss the use of dietary supplementation with your physician, as they may have additional input regarding a supplement regimen.

When it comes to uterine fibroids, you need to choose botanicals and nutrients that will help reduce inflammation and support healthy cellular development.

I think you would benefit greatly by adding a strong, absorbable curcumin to your daily regimen. Curcumin, a compound found in the spice turmeric, is a potent antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory that works via multiple pathways. I recommend taking 750 – 1,500 mg of high absorption curcumin daily. Choose a product that features a curcumin with excellent absorption that has been proven in published human studies. The best form I have ever found uses curcumin blended with turmeric essential oils. This curcumin has been shown in published human studies to be better absorbed than standard curcumin.

In addition to the curcumin, I would also recommend adding a boswellia extract. Boswellia is a specific inhibitor of 5-LOX, an enzyme that activates leukotrienes, which induce inflammation. Because it helps reduce inflammation, along with oxidative stress (free radical damage), boswellia is effective for a variety of health conditions. I recommend taking 500 – 1,000 mg of boswellia extract daily. Be sure to look for a boswellia extract that is standardized for AKBA (short for Acetyl-11-keto-β-Boswellic Acid), one of the most beneficial boswellic acids. It’s also important to find a boswellia extract that has filtered out the majority of beta-boswellic acid. Unlike most boswellic acids, beta-boswellic acid is actually pro-inflammatory. Removing it greatly enhances the potency of the boswellia extract.

Lastly, I believe you should also consider adding iodine to your daily regimen. Iodine helps prevent the hormonal imbalances that can lead to uterine fibroids/cysts. For optimal support, I suggest choosing a formula that contains multiple forms of iodine. I recommend taking 12.5-25 mg of iodine daily.
